Yoga for Beginners

People who do not exercise often or are too busy to go to the gym are at risk for diseases caused by stress.  Physical activity helps the body deal with stress and the demands of everyday life.  If one becomes unhealthy they are less productive and it is hard for him or her to achieve goals.

One of the purposes of yoga is to develop practices and purposes that are right for anyone.  There is a yoga session out there for anyone whether you have a lot of time or no time at all.  You can do yoga anywhere, in your office, room, in your car or even the bus on the way home.  Yoga sessions can range anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour and a half. Yoga is also a great way to help lose weight and get into shape.  Yoga helps build strength, endurance and flexibility.  Some styles of yoga such as Ashtanga, Power Yoga and Bikram Yoga are very active and aerobic.

The most important thing to remember about yoga is attitude.  One needs to have the desire to expand self awareness, which is done with proper alignment and balance.   A basic yoga session starts with warm up exercises, followed by a series of sitting and standing poses to align feet and help with breathing.   Then twists to relieve tension in the spine, supine and prose poses to release tension in the abdomen and finally finishing poses to cool down.

When looking for a spot to practice yoga, choose a place that is free from distractions, somewhere quiet, clean and well ventilated.   Use a mat, beach towel or blanket to add support and comfort when doing sitting or lying poses.  It is best for one to wear loose fitting clothing such as shorts, leotards or sweat clothes.  Yoga can be done barefoot or with socks on.  An empty stomach is recommended and a glass of warm water should be consumed about fifteen minutes before.  Practicing yoga first thing in the morning is a great way to revitalize the body and mind and practicing breathing and meditation at night helps induce restful sleep.

An easy pose is the best way to start practicing yoga to condition the body for more difficult exercises.  There is no need to strain, and if pain or fatigue is felt, one should pause and relax, all while breathing.   Some props that can be used for yoga beginners are a non-slip mat, a strap or belt, cotton or wool blanket, chair with arm rests and a wooden or foam block.  These props help provide support and enable the beginner to do more poses.
